    Is this Home or PRO?

Is your one account an administrator account?

What happens when you go to Windows Update?

Sounds to me like something has become corrupted. When you say boot screen do you mean log in screen?

sorry.... No net access for a long time.

    I have Win XP pro.
I have upgraded with SP2 now, restored my original kernel and that problem got resolved. I have one Admin account.
the Login Screen meaning that screen where u get a list of user names. In that, i created a new user and that new user got listed in that login screen, but when i selected that user to login, ( whether that new user is a limited user or an admin) the system is unable to create that user... it says that it cannot find the specified files.
now i dont want to reformat my hard disk for i have important data on C: drive, and some software whose CDs have gone home. ( and home is a far way off )
so can anyone tell me what is gone. is there any utility like SFC on Win 98 to check for files integrity? My laptop was infected with a trojan and 6 spyware which were removed by norton 2002 and spybot SnD respectively.
