XP freezing up.

XP freezing up.
A colleague of mine tells me that his pc has started to freeze up. He says it happens after about 1 minute of inactivity. As long as he keeps the mouse moving it is fine. The only solution is to reboot as CTRL+ALT+DEL will not even work. He claims that he has not installed any software or hardware recently that would cause this. Any ideas?
Many Thanks.
Steve.

Look in the Event Viewer:
START > RUN > eventvwr.msc
Open the System & also the Applications tab & look at the red X errors. Click error line for details. Look for errors that are "timed" coinciding with a freeze.
Post back the SOURCE & Event ID as well as "Description".
So does he have to power down the machine when it freezes?
Also open the command prompt & type in chkdsk/f
You will be asked if you want to run chkdsk on next boot Y or N: choose Y & reboot. This will fix any disk errors.

Thanks, I'll pass this info onto him tomorrow.
To answer one of your questions, he does have to power down when it freezes up. I suspected a screen saver problem, but he says he disabled it and it still happens.
Many Thanks.
Steve.
