Installing problems
Hi all,
I've recently formatted my HDD since my pc was getting slower and slower. I've partitioned my drive into 3 partitions, one for Windows, one for virtual memory, and the other for programs. I converted to NTFS.
I've installed Windows, but it's giving me a hard time installing software. When I try to install, the system gives me messages like "The system cannot open the device or file specified", "Some installation files are corrupt, please download a fresh copy" and messages like these. I know that my files aren't corrupt at all, they're the same .exe's that work fine on other pc's.
I can't even Window Update my system, error 0x800A0007 appears, I've searched about this and I had to download a piece of software from Microsoft. But alas, the setup cannot run, the system tells me that the system cannot open the file specified!
Anyone knows what the problem can be? Thanks.

Dont know if I have any ideas but I wonder some things:
Did you do the whole set-up from the XP CD? (No 3rd party software)?
How do things look in Disk Management?
Do any of these file errors have #'s?
How large is the XP partition?
Perhaps try the whole thing again?
It is my understanding that initially one would only create 2 partitions; 1: the XP (say 10G) & 2: the remainder. After install the remainder can be further partitioned via the Disk Manager. I dont know if this approach makes a difference or not.
Here is a good install guide if you should need more info:

If for some reason you dont want to start from scratch you can also run a Repair Install of XP on the XP partition which will leave the other partitions intact.
Hopes this helps some.
