    MDAC Not Updating ???

I have a user whose trouble started when her UPS Worldship 6.0 software stopped working. The error message was very vague stating that Worldship had suffered an "internal error" and to contact UPS technical support. She did, and the UPS tech support person told her that it was a "Windows issue" and that MDAC was not updating.

I have no idea what MDAC is, but I do know this from doing a little research. The UPS Worldship software requires MDAC version 2.5, and she has MDAC version 2.7.

The only other issue I can find on her machine is that I can't update her machine to Windows XP Service Pack 2. She is set to receive automatic updates, but it hasn't shown up. I've tried to go directly to the Windows Update website, but when I navigate there, the screen is blank. I've ordered the Service Pack 2 on cd from Microsoft.

    Any thoughts??

    Thanks,
    Jennifer

MDAC is Microsoft Data Access Components. It is a large set of files to help software communicate with different Microsoft data repositories, e.g. Excel, Access, SQL Server, Foxpro, etc. UPS Worldship 6.0 probably uses an MDAC driver to access its data from an Access database, an XML file, a SQL Server database, etc.

Normally, a newer version of MDAC will be as good if not better than a previous version. You might find that there's one particular issue in 2.7 that's affecting you. Try getting version 2.8 installed and see if that addresses it. You can get it from http://www.microsoft.com/mdac.

The fact that Windows Update doesn't run and you cannot get XP SP2 suggests to me, however, that you have a more fundamental problem to address first. Work out what's wrong with that and you'll probably find everything else gets sorted out along the way.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

I had read that Service Pack 2 has MDAC 2.8, which is why I went down that road in the first place. I'll wait and get the Service Pack 2 cd and see what happens.

    Thanks again!

If your user is on a network using Proxy Server, you may find that you can't see the Windows Update screen because you need to go to Internet Explorer's options screen and switch on 'Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections' on the Advanced tab.

That's not a guaranteed answer but I've resolved similar issues on PCs on my network by switching on that option.
