Power Outage, computer turns on, but no display?

    Hi all,

The power went out and the computer was on. My computer restarts, what with the power light and hard drive activity lights, but my monitor seems to be at standby state, with a orange light instead of green. I unplugged and re-plugged everything...

    Any thoughts??

    Thanks!

    Michael

welcome to dal the online computer help forum

I've seen some monitors stick in standby mode (usually a bad relay) so indicator light stays amber and never goes to green. Sometimes pushing power on/off several times fast will get it to work, but if this doesn't fix the problem please come back to me

    hope this helps

Does any the monitor even show trying to go into full power mode at reboot (so you can see the bios screen?)

Shows absolutely nothing. Just amber light. Someone above told me to pop the power button a few times, and that made the green light stay on longer when done, but went right back to amber....

Do you have another monitor you can try?

Everything else seems to be working? Do you hear any system sounds?
Like windows could be starting sounds, but you just can't see it?

Also repeating a post with a similar problem:

a brief search showed this possible fix & its' rationale:
Unplug the computer from the wall, hold the power button in for 1 minute.

It actually does 3 things -- it resets the bios in a minor way,
removes any static electricity in the system, and it helps reset the
power/connections with the printer, scanner, cable mode, etc...

If this happens again, start tinkering with what you can. Get a new surge
protector or APC/UPS backup, try moving to a different circuit in the house,
switch out the power cords, etc.
