application hangs and black screen appears
hi there
for a while now my computer has periodically crashed ie stoped responding an i've had to reboot to get it started again, gradually it got worse and began stopping altogether with a black screen, sometimes it rebooted and other times it just stopped on a black screen. It then progressed to a blue error message and once performed a memory dump. I have since formatted my hard drive and re installed windows xp all seemed fine, until a few days later when it started to hang and stopped responding, today it crashed to a black screen.
hope somebody can help me im desperate!!
Cath

Need to get the error messages. If you get blue screen stop errors please copy them as exactly as possible & post back.
You can also look in the Event Viewer: Start > Run > eventvwr.msc
Click the tabs to open then look for Red X errors. Click the error lines for details. Look for times that would coincide with a crash. Post the Source & Event ID as well as the description.

What are you specs? Computer make & model? Hard drive? RAM? etc.
Have you installed any hardware or software that might have triggered these problems?
What version of microsoft Office do you have?
Here are general facts for the shutdown error:
# A Stop 0xA message might occur after installing a faulty device driver, system service, or firmware. If a Stop message lists a driver by name, disable, remove, or roll back the driver to correct the problem. If disabling or removing drivers resolves the issues, contact the manufacturer about a possible update. Using updated software is especially important for multimedia applications, antivirus scanners, and CD mastering tools.
# A Stop 0xA message might also be due to failing or defective hardware. If a Stop message points to a category of devices (video or disk adapters, for example), try removing or replacing the hardware to determine if it is causing the problem.
Troubleshooting a Stop 0x0000000A error in Windows XP
do you get details such as these:
STOP 0x0000000A(0xWWWWWWWW, 0xXXXXXXXX, 0xYYYYYYYY, 0xZZZZZZZZ)
those hang errors seem to relate to Office products. do you have problems even when not running any Office products?

Hi
i have not added any hardware or device drivers, or any software that might have triggered these faults. I am running on windows xp, the computer also hangs on internet explorer also and when i am dialing up an internet connection and once on start up and once when i was running registry mechanic. I have had no other stop error message details.

that scan shows everything except the make & model of your puter.
it might be useful if we can find your manual on-line.
the RAM quote is interesting:
"Memory (RAM):
PropertyValue
Total Memory Deteced in Hardware: ~0 MB
Memory Reported to Operating System: 511MB"
does your BIOS POST see all your RAM when you boot up?
have you checked your Device Manager?
go to Start > Run > devmgmt.msc
look thru all the tabs searching for any yellow "!"
-
hi
i put the computer together myself a couple of years ago, when i attended one of those 'build your own pc' courses at college, so i dont have make and model as i bought all the components seperate online.
the memory testing on start up reads - 524288k.
the computer also hung when i went into have a look at the bios ( when you press del on start up) and also hung when it performed a disk check!
I have looked at the device manager there are no yellow tabs

Have you tried disconnecting the printer & all other external devices?
You should at least have SP1 if not 2.
The BIOS setup hang is very strange!
As to the disk check:
#1. Run CHKDSK in XP Recovery Console:
Set pc BIOS to boot from CDROM. Place XP CD in drive. Reboot from the
CD.
Select the first option R Repair/Recovery Console. Select your Windows
partition by number. Usually it is 1 . Login to XP with administrator
password. Then run CHKDSK /P from the command line. (In Recovry
console /P replaces /F ).
Run it once (or repeat) until it shows no errors. This should clear
the "dirty" flag on the disk drive C. Run CHKDSK for each drive on your
system.
CHKDSK /P :X where X is letter for disk drive
References for Recovery Console:
Description of the Windows XP Recovery Console - Article ID Q314058
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q314058
HOW TO: Install and Use the Recovery Console for Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/directo...;EN-US;q307654
To exit the R Console, use the EXIT command.
#2. You are highly encouraged to have the Recovery Console installed on
your
disk so that it is a bootup choice.
#3. Take a look at this, especially if your file system is NTFS.
Windows XP Patch: NTFS chkdsk.exe Update
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/r...eleaseID=36422
Also
http://support.microsoft.com/support....asp?ID=315403
It is normal for XP to do a quick (very quick) check of the disk
volumes. Only if the drive is marked "dirty" would it do the full
CHKDSK.
Or if you had specified a "chkdsk /f" to be scheduled at next pc
bootup.
A power shutdown without a preceding Win XP logoff & shutdown from menu
would flag the system.
So would a loss of electrical power.
Do you have installed on this system --- an older version of PC Anywhere
? & if so, make sure you have checked with Symantec for
patches/updates. Older versions of PC Anywhere are a known source of
your problem or , at least, with it & CHKDSK.
Do you have a scanner on this system? If so, is it XP-compatible, and
which make/model is it? Some HP can cause this problem.
