    Strange Dialog box appears when logging off user

    Hi,

    I just got done cleaning and repairing / fixing damage cause by some trogen, worm, or virus. It screwed up the registry, Deleted Norton Internet Security & Anti-virus registry entries, Spy Sweeper and Spybot S & D would not update, removed all exe file associations, etc. I believe I have everything back in order, but when I log off (any user name) the system starts saving your settings, then a dialog box with strange charactors pops up.
    It stays there until you click OK of close out box. Then goes back to saving your settings and goes to the log on screen.

    I have pictures of the screen when this happens. I tried to attach, but they were to large to upload.

    Also, are there any good registry programs online that will scan registry and clean up the stuff that doesn't belong there and list or repair things that are missing.

    Thank you in advance for your help with this matter.

    Hi,

    I ran Registry Mechanic trial and came up with 400+ errors. It fixed some, but I guess I have to buy it to fix the rest.

    Does anyone know of any "free" ones?

    I also did "Owen's Items" and posted the response to the Spyware forum as I also have another problem getting rid of Altnet.

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Jephree,

    Thank you for pointing me to the hoverdisk program.

    I downloaded and it came up with 1100+ errors, some in red and some in green. I need to read up on what to delete and what not to delete. I don't feel real comfortable deleting everything as of right now.

    Thanks again

    Peter

    green = go delete

    red = ?

    by default there is a save backup. [/] in lower left corner.

    also to be safe go to Start > Run > regedit

    -then click File then Export then choose My Documents to export your registry.

    This will put a copy of your current registry in a file in My Documents.

    Should you find the need to you can always go to that file & Import the whole registry back.

    If after cleanup everything works ok then all these backups can be deleted as well.
