hi all, hope everyone had a gr8 xmas.
i am having bad probs with my pc, every time i switch on it takes about 20 mins to 1 hour to get to start up screen then another 20or so to get in my account. then takes forever to get where ever else i want to, i can be playing a game from my desk top and it crashes when previously playing ok, then screen goes blank, numerous times i have programs not responding and i'm getting really fed up with it now, first i thought maybe it was something to do with the broadband now obviously it must be with the pc itself, modem maybe?? please help i am at the end of my tether,

Have you ever cleaned up your system with Disk Cleanup, and Disk Defragmenter, etc.
-
Arella
yes do that quite often doesn't make any difference, thanks for the suggestion tho
-
You should have twice the RAM that you do.
Total Memory Deteced in Hardware: ~128 MB
Memory Reported to Operating System: 126MB
XP really needs 256 min.
But that shouldn't make things as bad as you say.
Look in the Event Viewer for errors
go to Start > run > eventvwr.msc
click oon tabs then click red X errors.
Post back some that seem to relate (in time) to a crash.
Post Source & Event ID found in the upper right corner of screen.
Perhaps this will help.

thanx jephree, am trying this now, would it be possible for me to message you?
-
it is telling me the server did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.
event id 10010
these don't seem to correspond with the crashes tho. this happened 1/2 hour later
the only thing coming up when i tried to first connect was information - event log
event i.d 6009 dunno if this is what you mean. and reading thru some of the event logs i am thinking that perhaps as you say i need more ram
will look further thank you v.much jephree
-
those general errors just point to a non response. the dcom 10010 is sometimes ram but just as well i see it as a problem with msn messenger. 6009 is a server non response.
Did this just start happening? any old problems? any new hardware or software?
when you crash does the machine reboot? if so change this setting in order to get errors:
You can turn off the feature that instructs XP to autostart on system
failure. Right click on My Computer and select Properties->Advanced
Tab->Startup & Recovery section->Settings button->uncheck "Automatically
restart" Apply. This will give you a blue screen with info on it and you
will have to manually restart the computer. The info might give you an idea
whether or not the problem is hardware or software related.
anything else you can see in the event viewer? are there alot of errors? alot at the same time?

have been having probs for a while now this is why i first joined this group. at one point we had 3 lots of xp running but found out and removed all 3 then reinstalled only one. the pc then started to run fast and was brilliant then when everything was added, norton, spybot s&d, microsoft works, printers etc it went slower i defrag weekly if needed run norton weekly incase of bugs n stuff but its playing up im not computer minded like that but am learning
most of the events are information but there are also several error ones. DCOM event i.d 10005 and service control manager.event i.d 7009 and event i.d 7000, these 3 all appear together.
when the pc crashes it is only for a few minutes then carries on with what it was doing, occasionally it restarts itself but not often. also when swapping from one prog to another or when shutting down , the picture slowly rolls down the screen, is this normal? it never used to do it.
can you tell me the process for getting more RAM pls. sorry to keep pestering you but i dunno who else to ask. thanx a million for all the help..

more errors dealing with non response. are these from system or application or both?
i will look up your motherboard and get back to you on RAM upgrade (it's easy & relativly inexpensive.)
are you familiar with the command promt? all programs > accessories > command prompt
open it and type in chkdsk/f
it will ask if you want to run chkdsk on next startup Y or N? ...type Y
restart computer will check your disk for errors.
will get back to your RAM asap

you currently have one "stick" of 128MB
you can have two "sticks" of 256MB
you should at least have two "sticks" of 128MB giving you 256MB total, which is the suggested minimum to run XP well.
you just need to get "PC100 non-ECC SDRAM"
if you choose to get another 128 you should be able to find it at any good computer store. If you choose to get 2 new 256 to give the max of 512 you need to be sure & check the density of the RAM as some older systems wont run on the "over-the-counter" stuff.
let us know if we can be more helpfull
