    "Skipping" computer...

    This is a bit of a minor problem, but a fairly annoying one.

    My computer occasionally skips. Basically, every once in a while, my computer freezes and unfreezes a couple of times consecutively for a couple of seconds. Just imagine a cd that would skip every few minutes or so. It's not really damaging anything, but it's really annoying, especially when I'm playing music from my computer.

    I just cleaned out all of my adware, so I don't think that's the problem. However, I did install a wireless network card at about the same time this problem started happening. Do you think that may be the reason?

    Another more major issue I've been having with my computer are random restarts. Well, sort of random. My brother's computer is just down the hall, and we're both sharing an internet connection (I'm using wireless, he's using a LAN cable). For some strange reason, both of our computers randomly restart or freeze at the same time. Or, if my computer is running, and my brother turns on his, my computer restarts as his is booting up.

    Really weird...

    Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Did you change the factory password for the router that is being used?

    hey n8dogg;

    change this setting in order to get error messages & post back the full message.

    You can turn off the feature that instructs XP to autostart on system
    failure. Right click on My Computer and select Properties->Advanced
    Tab->Startup & Recovery section->Settings button->uncheck "Automatically
    restart" Apply. This will give you a blue screen with info on it and you
    will have to manually restart the computer. The info might give you an idea
    whether or not the problem is hardware or software related.

    Alright, I did as you asked, and I get a blue screen of death. The error message reads: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

    I googled it, and found that a lot of people get this error, but it's always involved with playing a computer game of some kind. Mine just simply happens on it's own accord.

    Can you confirm you have xp and that you still are experiencing the problem.

    Is there any other detail to the message? Usually a # such as: 0x0000000A: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

    Also check the Event Viewer = Start > Run > eventvwr.msc

    Look for red X errors after clicking (opening) tabs.
    Click error line for details.
    Look for Source & Event ID in the upper right corner of detail window.
    Post back data.

    Does your brother's computer get the same errors?

    I went thru and picked out one of each error from the application and system tabs. (There was nothing at all in security)

    Oh, and my skipping problem was solved. All I had to do was update my network card driver...
