audio driver
my friend has formatted her pc 2 days ago, evidently she lost her audio driver. now i guided her through finding out what chip she has so as to download a suitable driver ( we used aida32). it turned out she's got the same chip as mine (VIA AC'97 Enhanced Audio controller Driver ), but when i sent my dirver it wouldn't work, we have tried a bunch of via drivers and none worked, i don't know what the other things i should look at are, but here's some of her system info:
Motherboard ID 12/24/2001-VT8366-VT8233-6A6LVF09C-00
Motherboard Name FIC AN11 (5 PCI, 1 AGP, 1 ACR, 3 DIMM, Audio)
Motherboard Chipset VIA VT8366A Apollo KT266A
AUDIO: VIA AC'97 Enhanced Audio controller Driver

Have you tried to obtain the driver via the Device Manager?
When you say it wouldn't work did you get any error messages? or wha happened?
-
no we didn't try to obtain it by device manager. yes she got an error message saying" no audio hardware is available or the hardware isn't responding. i don't believe it's a hardware problem for that happened only after the format.
-
hey i had the same probs when i formatted ( i am not hijacking this log as i have fixed it along time ago and am giving her/him the info in which i used )
i also had a via chip and tried all sorts , in the end i used to drivers , one was the via 4 in 1 and the ac97 audio drivers, i still have them both so if you need them i can send them to you via email if you want?
-
hey chou, thanks for your time, but they didn't work
.
but well, i just uninstalled my audio driver and got a different error message from hers :S
the sound driver works only on msn messenger audio conversation, but not on other IM programs. at windows media player she gets this error message: cannot play back the audio stream: no audio hardware is available, or the hardware is not responding
on real player she gets: cannot open the audio device, another application may be using it
can this probably indicate anything?

yea said same thing on mine, as for them error messages these are what it means
CAUSE
This issue may occur if either of the following conditions is true:
• Your computer does not have a sound card, or your sound card is not working correctly.
• Another program is currently using your sound card, so it is not available for Windows Media Player to use.
Note This cause is specific to Microsoft Windows NT-based or Microsoft Windows 95-based computers.
• The hardware acceleration is set to too high.
hm il have a look now for different drivers for you

btw can i just ask a few questions,
im presuming she is using xp??
and her soundcard is legacy VIA AC 97 (WDM) ??

I am having the exact same problem as leen14, and I have the exact same motherboard and audiocard, and the same problem = the audio codecs from that you all mention do not work.
What can I do?
How did you finally fix it leen14?
It's been a month now without any audio and it's getting a little bit boring...

Have you tried the driver posted by chou?
