    System Recovery

    HI
It has come to the time when my PC need a new copy of windows.
When I bought this Laptop I restored it successfully.
I think i might have messed up the Backup Partition.
I have included a picture of the partition in Partition Magic 8.0.
Could someone tell me what the setting of the partition should be.
I am using a Packard Bell Easynote K5285.
The Smart Restore program works fine and i can restore the programs I need.
When I put the recovery CD in to the drive and restart it get it to restore the pc.
It then restarts and i think start the restore process.
I'm not sure but i think it says that HDD is missing or something.
It then tell me to press any key to exit. So I do. It goes back in to the recovery program and says there was some sort of glue error.
On the top blue bit it said error 5.
If you need any more information just ask.
    Thanks

Glue is a programming language. The logical conclusion would
be that the Recover CD has elements that are programmed using that
language, and it is failing for some reason ... perhaps the CD is damaged,
unreadable, or can't find your back-up partition.

Can you give more exact error messages?

What makes you think you might have messed up the Backup Partition? This should be a hidden partition.

    Is your XP still functioning?

Why are you trying to restore?

My winXP is still functioning but i just want to restore it because it become a bit slow now and i like new fresh systems.LOL. About the partition being hidden it was. But when i tried the recovery cd it will load up the drivers then restart. I tried unhiding the partition and it starting gettiing some where. I says it can't find >HDD< something like that. My C:\ Is called HDD. The smart restore works fine

This is from the other thread I think you mentioned.

Do you have the HP manual that came with the machine?

If you have located that hidden partition perhaps you can burn it to a CD.
There might be these instructions in your manual.

"The reason they gave you a floppy is that it is likely that there is a
hidden partition on your hard disk that contains the image of the PC as
shipped from the factory that they use to reset your PC to the as shipped
state in the event of a recovery. This is within the remit of what an OEM
is expected to provide you with - which is a minimum of a method of
restoring the machine to as shipped form factory state (this can include a
complete format of your hard disk and loss of all data and additional
    applications installed).
They are not required to provide you with either an OEM or full copy of
Windows XP. they do however often place all of the CD files in a folder
somewhere on your hard disk - have a look for a folder called Options or
    i386."

"If u read the rubbish that Packard Hell supplies with the machine there is a
detailed section in one of the books explaining how to recover the system
and also how to burn a recovery disc from the hidden partition on your
drive. I presume u bought this new if not you need to get the manuals."

    Hi
I got a Recovery cd. I can creat master cd's but i don't want to.
If i do create the master cd's will i have an options not to delete the partition.
If it do create the master cd's i donno if they will work. The recovery cd seems fine and so does the partition because system restore works.

A full XP CD has a Repair option that would leave partitions & programs intact but I don't think it would work on an OEM version.

System Restore works from within XP itself. (sorry if I mis-understand).

The errors you get indicate your disk can't find the partition.

    I will keep searching around...

Have you looked on any PackardBell sites?

    Look under support.

    Just from browsing the above PB forum I found one possibility;

If you have any hardware or drivers that were not on the original machine they should be removed before a restore attempt.

Dont know if this is relavent; just passing it on.

Searching the forums for your issues etc.

    Hi
No. I haven't added any hardware. I did put plug in a infrared dongle but i'v removed it.
Nop I cant think of any thing. could it be because i disabled some of the driver in the device manager.
