here my hijackthis log. Ive been trying so many different things and confusing the hell out of myself. All of my icons have changed to the generic icon image and i recieve the error message "windows cannot open this file" and am told to choose what i would like to open it with. I started in Command Prompt mode and copied regedit.exe to regedit.com and have access to my registry now.

Ive also tried to import certain .reg files that ive seen around that are said to help: xp_exe_fix.reg, xp_fileassoc, winxp_exe_fix.reg, all to no avail. A tried a couple system restores from various dates but it looks like w/e happened affected that too because it changed nothing. ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Have you noticed the file type being altered? From .exe to .lnk for example?

If so you might want to read this POST

As far as your HiJack This Log you should post it in the Spyware Virus section for reading.

No the file types have not been altered, all of the desktop icons are still lnk's.
I read through that entire post and dl'd the link on line 12 of that site. I then opened my registry and imported the .reg file and nothing happened. Am i doing this correctly? Do i have to restart?

Sorry about posting the log here, ill post it in the proper section now! (im an idiot!)
thanx for the quick response btw.

    A re-boot might be worth a try.

Do your Start Menu utilities work? Search? Run? Help & Support?

help and support does not work while Search and Run do. Ive rebooted mroe than a few times with no luck. The solution in the link u provided me worked for about half an hour until things went back to normal and my programs again refused to work. I thought i had it fixed but not at all. what should i do next?

Where as I can scan your HiJack This log I do not have the skills to tell you how to fix it.

All I can say is that you have a few "issues" in your log.

Therefore my advice is to wait till tomorrow for Owen to read your log in the Virus section.

The fact that things keep shifting is just another indication of an infection.
Probably about that AIM Toolbar, but let Owen look at it.
