Downloading files on XP to open in 98
I am giving my old computer to my son and had to reinstall windows 98. I cannot get 256 colour on it. The computer is not on the internet. I have tried downloading a driver for his graphics card on my own computer which runs XP, it downloads fine but when I try to install it on his computer all it sees is the documentation and not the actual drivers. Please can anyone help me get round this.
Thank you.

Hi Bear,
The windows 98 computer was made up for me privately as it has no make on the computer I can't tell you the make. All it has written on it is a label on the back saying int. art. nr 10830 and under that is :87139 108309 the video card I have in is S3 ProSavage DDR. The computer with windows XP was made by Time and has NVIDIA Gforce FX 5200. Basically I cannot get 256 colours on the 98 computer when I try it says that I can't do it because of the hardware. I used to have 256 colours on it and all I did was format the computer, now it won't let me have more than 16 colours. I read that I need to download a driver but whatever I save it on be it floppy or re-writer the drivers do not show up when I put the floppy/rewriter into the 98 computer. I would be grateful for your help. The 98 puter is not attached to the internet.
Thank you.

Are you sure the drivers you've tried are for 98?
2000 & XP have different drivers than 98 for that card.
Here are some driver sites to try: (make sure you get the 98 version)
S3 ProSavage DDR

Hello jephree,
Yes I downloaded the 98 version. For some reason it's almost as though because the files were downloaded on my XP xomputer the computer with 98 on doesn't seem to be able to read the drivers, even though I can see them on the cd when it's in the XP computer the only things that show up when the cd is put into the 98 computer is the documentation.

Have you tried NOT unzipping the file on XP but unzipping on 98?
My only idea is a possible conflict between the FAT32 & NTFS.
So far I see no precident to this issue but I will keep searching. It is interesting.

Yes I have tried downloading zipped and unzipping on 98 it unzips ok but still the drivers don't show. I can FAT32 the 98 computer but the last time I did that to another computer I had so many problems I had to do a recovery.

Perhaps try the whole process in safe mode?
