Let me see if I can be fairly brief,
I went start, run, perf and maint, system, dev manager, sound video game cont, then clicked on yamaha audio device,
the Yamaha audio device was on the system when purchased. when i go to device properties it indicates that the device is enabled and running. but no sound and when a DVD is attempted it gives an error message...also asks me if I want to update the driver? finally called Toshiba and yes they are having problems with that sound card...
should i consider replacing it ? A sound card can't be downloaded can it? isn't it hardware and the drivers for it software. you can tell I'm a rookie but trying to "get it"
I probably got ahead of myself on asking about the decompressing of files etc. I was thinking i could download something to get my sound to work instead of trouble shooting my current set-up.

Toshiba told you they had problems but offered no solution?
Did you try to update the drivers via the Device Manager?
You are right that the card (or chip) is hardware & drivers software.
If it is a removable card then it should be easily replaceable.
Can you find any exact specs; yamaha model?; #'s?; etc.? via the device manager?
If not try the D-A-L Hardware Scan & post it back here:
http://www.d-a-l.com/hardware-scan.php
Also what error does the DVD give? (Exact as possilble.)
When it asks to update drivers; did you say ok?

Yamaha ac-xg audio device...Yes toshiba offered the following, restore your comp to a previous date in time. The problem seems to be with windows updates, they (the sound card) makes windows "unstable" therefore the card is not enabled. (not after every re-boot, or re-start) just sporadically.
After your help I went back to the device and restored it --did not update it and it is now working. only time will tell for how long.
Thank You.
Now I have a new question. does this require a new post? Problem, direct x 9.0 c in order to run the sims 2 game--have downloaded and installed it, click on the sims 2 game icon and it says it can not find direct x to run game?
Sound problem seems to be O.K. for now, I'll keep my fingers crossed that it continues.

Here is the audio driver from Toshiba for XP Service Pack 1:
http://support.toshiba-tro.de/tools/...rwxpsp1-en.zip
If you have Service Pack 2 you might want to consider going back to SP1.
It is a .zip file. If you want to try it & still need .zip help, just let us know.
In order to check up on your Direct X status go to Start > Run > dxdiag

jephree,
I ran the diag and went thru all the tests and here is the answer from one of the tests:
Hardware acclerated direct 3d9+ is not available because the display driver does not support it. You may be able to get a newer driver from the hardware manufacturer.
All of the tests I ran I was able to hear music on or see the graphics. But the above message was one I received while in the "sound" tab of the test.
The message after the sound test read:
Your sound card does not support hardware buffering. Sounds will only play back from soft ware buffers.
Does this mean that the directx will not play with the Yamaha sound card?
thanks

here is a search that just reiterates an issue with your sound card and SP2
Yamaha ac-xg audio device
the driver link I gave in previous post was for SP1
dont know how it would change anything but maybe worth a try...
or you might want to go back to SP1
or as you first proposed getting a new sound card
