This is again from Kellys Korner:
Search - Freezes
To disable the Indexing service: Go to Start/Administrative Tools/Services. Double click Services and find the Indexing Service. Double click/properties/Stop. From the Status Type Box, select Disabled.
If it switches back at boot:
Disable the Indexing Service (Line 42)

This from a larger section on Search here (under S):

I have seen the broader issue of all these components failing together so I doubt if it's just a Search issue. I am still trying to find where i've seen this before.
Is the problem still limited to the one account?Originally Posted by zed
Have you tried creating another administrator account?
Another try from Kelly's:

scroll down to
Item No. 195 (right column), click on "Restore Desktop Icons and
Taskbar".
Install the registry fix, then reboot your computer.
Also; do you have a "windows" key on your keyboard?
or
CTRL+ESC (Display the Start menu)
If you can get into the Event Viewer look for errors relating to explorer.exe
.
