    WMP10 Likes My RAM

WMP10 is misbehaving. Whenever I open it up, it works fine for a few seconds and then proceeds to eat up my RAM. Well, at least SOMETHING eats it up; wmplayer.exe shows normal RAM usage in Task Manager, but my total RAM count goes down to zero and my page file goes berzerk. No extra RAM is used for system caching during this time and "memory used" does not add up to 512MB. When I attempt to end-task wmplayer.exe, the player GUI closes but wmplayer.exe remains open for about 5 minutes, after which it closes and my RAM and page file go back to normal.

I've tried uninstalling. I've tried reinstalling. I've tried rolling back. I've tried deleting WMP's folder. I've tried - well, basically everything I could think of, but to no avail. I need WMP for web streaming and WMA files; please help!

    welcome to D-A-L forums!

    hope you don't mind questions

did WMP10 ever work correctly on your machine?

is it a new install? anything else new?

besides the task manager stats; does the player work?

Have you checked the Event Viewer?
    START > RUN > eventvwr.msc

Look under application & system for red X errors

post any that relate to a time when the player was playing.

Yes, it used to work, but I don't remember what I did before this started happening.
Both Windows XP and WMP are about two months old.
The player works, but, as you can probably imagine, not very well without RAM. :P
The only red X's I see are from Firefox and other miscellaneous applications.

Thanks for the welcome! Glad to be here.

    download any other player?
    any media software?

    just another quick thought:
with the task manager open on the processes tab; run the player; see what's using CPU %

windows groups has a media player forum that i am searching.
you can find it here to search as well:

    WMP

Hmm...come to think of it, perhaps Real Alternative is somehow causing a problem. I'll have to double check.

    CPU %s are normal.

    Thanks for the link!

you may need to get rid of that or at least set your default settings to WMP.

    Set programs access and defaults

via control panel add remove programs
