So if I have residual files leftover from the uninstall, how do I get rid of them??
Is that a Full install CD or a repair CD? Did any kind of manual come with it?

Who's the manufacturer? Have you contacted them?

Is there an option on the CD to install one component at a time?

For what it's worth, here is a search from the Office site:

It is a Full Install CD that came with the laptop (Dell Inspiron 1100).

Yes, you are able to install one component at a time. Same exact error message with each one. It is definitely not the media itself...I successfully installed it on another (working) computer.

This laptop had issues to begin with - tons of spyware, etc. which Owen in the spyware forum helped me to clear up. I just can't help but wonder when I uninstalled, if little bits were not left behind that are hindering the reinstallation. That being said, is there any kind of program I can get to clear up any of those little bits?

I am searching for a way to identify such files: meanwhile: here is the thread that brought this to my attention: for what it's worth:

    Found this:

"If you want to uninstall Microsoft Office XP, then use the Add/Remove function in the Control Panel, then in Windows Explorer go to C > Program Files > Microsoft > Office, and delete any remaining files and folders."

Also if you don't have a Registry Cleaner I recommend this freeware:

    RegSeeker 1.35

Well, I didn't want to leave you hanging. I deleted the program files, ran the registry cleaner and no difference. My frustration got the best of me, so I through the laptop out the window of the 3rd story apartment.

No, not really. I just reformatted and reinstalled Windows XP. (I started having other problems at start up unrelated to Office). After I did that, Office installed just fine.

This laptop was pretty eaten up with spyware and viruses, so maybe it just needed a clean slate.

Thank you for your help!! Happy Holidays!!
