Which program and what's the full message you get?
-
No specific program, but any thing I am running. Usually I run Photoshop Elements, aol, Word. Today, being worried about a crash, I installed ntbackup. When I got to step 3,"browse this cd" I waited ,then knew,Con alt del ,. Clicked end task and ,"this program is not responding,End now and you will lose saved data to return to windows, blah blah. To end program now click end now". Sorry about the blah blah but as many times as I have seen it I can't remember any more than that. When it happened, I had dell support on the phone. The best they could suggest was memory leak. They tried hard for about 45 minutes, but no resolution of problem.
-
Ouch - never end an unresponding program.
Windows allocates a set amount of time to these programs to unhook from whatever systems they have got themselves hooked into. Ending them prematurely can have all sorts of consequences.
Memory leaks are my flavour of the day today, so I'll agree. Can't get involved in a HJT thread, just noticed.... I get me fingers snapped!
whats your page file set at? watch the task manager and see if the pagefile bloats unduly - that's the leaking prog doing it..... gotta go, they're coming after me....

Have you recently upgraded to XPSP2?
I have seen a list of applications that have problems with XPSP2.
List of them that are known: http://support.microsoft.com/default...t=windowsxpsp2
It could be a number of things, you have a lot of 'not needed' start up items I can see,
some you need, like firewall and antivirus of course you need, go here and install Start Up Control panel, remove some of those uneeded applications at start up.
Startup control panel here: http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
-
Cool link that startup panel, think I'll click your icon for that.
-
Thanks all for advice. I'll start to apply. I'll also stop ending unresponding programs. Not downloaded sp2 yet.

Usually, programs stop responding due to corrupt components, resource conflicts and many other reasons. In that case, try to reinstall the program to fix the issue. However, the PC becomes bloated and will frequently hang over time. That's why people start to resort to other utility to clean up space and improve performance. Here's an effective fix to program not responding issues.

ravendawson, you just responded to a post that is 6 years old! I suspect the original problem is long gone by now
