XP runs very slow on an Amd athlon 996 with 640 ram??

Hi. First I ugraded from 2000 to xp, however this errored and I had to format. I then put 'me' on and later decided to do a full install with xp. It installed fine and then had both 'xp' and 'me' on separate drives. Xp ran very slow with the windows dragging when i moved them. I thought this maybe because 'me' was on the system too, so i did a quick formatt and deleted every thing on that drive. (the quick format didnt work properly).

But still xp is running like a tortoise with an 'amd athlon 996, QDI motherboard'. and 640 ram. Is this motherbooard known not to be compatable with xp? can anyone please help?

Ok, did you format just the ME part after putting XP on? I'm wondering why you didn't just put XP on by itself after a full format as what was discussed in your other thread? Well let us know what you end up doing here.

I was going to just have 'me' on but then realized i couldn't install all the latest adobe sofware on it.

ME needs a M$ patch to run anymore than 500 mb of r.a.m. I would advise quitting using ME and sticking to just XP. M$ don't advise dual boot systems that run anything other than XP as a standalone.

    What size drives you got?

There is a known bug in XP that slows the system terribly, unfortunately I can't remember the fix (Vodka memory leak) anyhow the patch is on the MS site.

Whilst your there check out the HCL (Hardware Compatibility List) for XP, though I should reckon your mobo will be OK.

Talking of which I assume you've checked the mobo manfr site for any BIOS updates that may be relevant?

PS Never update a BIOS just 'cos it's the newest, always do it for a reason!

LOL - Ithought typos like that where strictly my domain / workgroup / whatever

Thanx people. Updating the graphics card driver has cleared that problem up!
