weird processor thing
hey, almost everything i try to do involving any sorts of graphics on my pc instantly makes it lock up with a really horrible looping sound problem. First i was told it was ram, i replaced all my ram and it still locks up, then it was heating but the temp is 40 degrees so thats not it, then my graphics card but that works perfect in my friends computer, then my bro said it could be sound card, but it still crashes without it in. Now a friend says it looks like somthing is overclocked causing it to crash. So i run a diagnostic thing which says my processor (amd xp 2000) should run be running at it's maximum speed of 1500mhz which i thought was correct but it's actually running at 1666mhz. So is this causing it to crash? I have not overclocked my proessor at all.
Any help would be awesome (i am itching to play doom 3)
cheers
Graeme

The rating of a processor (e.g. 1500MHz) is the fastest that the manufacturer thinks it can run with total reliability. If you go faster than the rated speed ("overclocking"), then you might suffer stability problems such as crashing or freezing. The faster you go, the more likely you are to have stability issues.
It may be that your BIOS has incorrectly set the parameters for the processor.
1500MHz is likely to be a 333MHz clock speed and a 4.5 multiplier (333 x 4.5 = 1500). 1666MHz (well 1665 to be precise) would, therefore, be a 333MHz clock speed and a 5.0 multiplier (333 x 5 = 1665).
Do you know how to go into the BIOS and make adjustments? If so, see if you can manually set the CPU parameters to lower the clock multiplier.
Please note that, like the Windows registry, incorrect use of the BIOS may have adverse effects on your system and D-A-L.com and its members cannot accept responsibility for consequences of taking advice freely given on this site.

yeah i know how to get into my bios but i dont know what i have to change

FYI
The AMD 2000+XP = 1667Mhz (true speed). This apparent anomoly is due to the general public not understanding the importance of CPU architecture and focussing instead on quoted Mhz.
It's a bit like putting a 2000cc Jaguar against a 1000cc motorcycle (any make/model), as they have inherently different designs (architectures), even though the car boasts a bigger cc rating, the power to weight ratio of the motorcycle will make it faster all round.
AMD realised the lower Mhz rating of their CPU's was being viewed disadvanteously by the buying public, therefore they quote a comparative speed ie what it can match in the Intel league.
<history_mode="off">
Your CPU speed is as it should be if you have the clock multiplier and FSB set as below.
133Mhz FSB 12.5=Multiplier
Back to your problem:
This sounds like your sound card is conflicting with your graphics, I'd suggest uninstalling the soundcard, unplugging it and putting it in another PCI slot, then re-installing the soundcard drivers.
PS Creative cards love IRQ5

Just remove the battery from your mobo for a few minutes then put it back in. Power supply back on reboot, del goto bios reconfigure setting, without overclocking, if in doubt in that section choose f7 (optimal), f10 check y (yes) and reboot.
