    1) Was this machine working ok up to a certain point? Did it fail all of a sudden?
    2) Any hardware or software installs about this same time?
    3) Is XP an OEM install?
    4) Is the machine under waranty?
    5) Perhaps you can go back to Best Buy & get your CD?
    6) If it's a recovery CD for an OEM you can also contact the Manufacturer.

Boot Viruses are very rare. Do you have some particular reason to think that this is really virus related?

Also perhaps try to run D-A-L's Hardware scan found here:

I was using crack sites and then it made an ad on my desktop background and I clicked it cuz nothing else worked then everything went to lowbit color, so I restarted in Safe Mode and deleted my user files and used Admin, but when I start up normaly it only lets me choose the one i deleted, which isnt there and doesnt go through. I have Aluria's Spyware and deleted a trojan downloader but it was only one... i need to update the def files wich says file cannot be found on thier site. It was able to instal unlike AVG. If i could get AVG to work I know for sure I could delete the Virus. And I did already take in mind to go back to BestBuy, but it was a while ago and I didnt know it was missing until now.

    XP installed
Couldnt run the DAL HWS scripts... figures

I can run Windows in normal Mode now, I ran AVG and it found 4 viruses and deleted them. It found viruses in the System Volume Information folder which it deleted some how, I thought nothing is allowed to edit that folder. Some system files were deleted though and I need to restore them, I tried sfc /runnow, it ran a prompt then exited and didnt do anything. I went to BestBuy and they didn't have my cd, just my luck...

Anyone know how I can restore critical system files without the WinXP CD? Or where I can get the files for a WinXP CD, cuz I have a program to change the CD Key after I install the new OS.

    Thanks!

Oh and the DCOM file in the System section of the Event Viewer now says...

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: DCOM
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 10005
    Date: 12/3/2004
    Time: 9:40:33 PM
    User: ASDF\TiHKAL
    Computer: ASDF
    Description:
DCOM got error "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. " attempting to start the service ImapiService with arguments "-Service" in order to run the server:

Recovery CDs vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. In fact, some so-called recovery CDs contain nothing but a small program to recover the C:\
partition from a hidden partition, which is stored on the same physical hard
drive. If the hard drive is replaced, or if the partition table is damage,
such a CD is pretty worthless.

Read the manual, if you don't have it, it is probably on-line, or contact the PC maker to get details on how to use their recovery CD, or what other recovery options they can provide. For example, they might suggest wiping all partions and creating new ones, then using their CD. Or, for a small fee, they might send you a new/different recovery CD, or for a larger fee a new hard drive with the C:\ partition already installed.
