Internet Connection Sharing Problems

Internet Connection Sharing Problems
Hi people,
About 2 months ago I installed wireless network adapters to link up 2 PC's in my home and it all worked fine to start off with, I could share files and folders and even had an internet gateway on the client computer
Anyway recently the file and printer sharing has worked fine, but I can't access the internet from my client computer, even though it works fine on the host.
If I try and log onto msn for example, i get an error message saying '0x81000365 - We could not sign you into MSN Messenger. It appears you are behind a firewall that might be preventing you from connecting to the .NET Messenger service'. Also when I right-click the network icon on the toolbar and click 'repair' I get a message saying: 'The following procedures failed: Renewing the IP address.'
Sometimes it works fine. (Without a gateway though) But only about once a month. I have re-run the network setup wizard umpteen times but with no luck.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is very frustrating!
Thanks in advance
Chris Brew

Hi,
Firstly can you check the properties of the internet connection on the host machine and ensure the connection is shared for other users to connect via it to the internet.
-
You could also try manually setting theIP Address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway values in the properties for your wireless card on the machine that 's giving you the trouble.
I get a similar problem if I leave Windows to configure it or assign these values automatically, so by putting the values in manually sorted the problems out. Might work for you too.

Thanks again for the replies people. much appreciated.
I dont mean to sound like a complete idiot, but what would I set the IP Address/Subnet Mask/Default Gateway values as? BTW I checked to see if the internet connection on the host is set up as shared, and it is.
Thanks
Chris

Chris,
Out of interest is the client machine running any firewall software at all? Like Norton Internet Security?

Well, my default values (from what I can remember) were as follows:
IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
But obviously this would vary from machine to machine. What you could do is look at the above properties on a different machine, and give your machine the same properties, but change the last digit of the IP address to a couple of values higher than the one on the machine you looked at (i.e. if the machine you took the properties from had an IP address of 192.168.0.1, then the machine you are configuring would need an IP address of 192.168.0.3 or similar. The default Gateway would be a constant value across all the machines on the network, (i.e. the ip address of your router).

Thanks for all of your help, yes by changing the IP address to a static one it seems to have solved the problem.
Thanks again
Chris
