Can't access my e-mails or any web pages
Thankfully we have two computers so I can access my e-mails and get on here or I'd be completely stumped.
I work at home so being online is crucial to my business. So, I finally decided to get broadband. I tried setting it up on Friday but had problems with the modem I had been sent from my ISP. The guy I spoke to there for support was great and we tried loads of ways to get it to work. The conclusion was that the equipment must have a fault so they are sending a new modem.
My PROBLEM now is that I cannot receive my e-mails or access any web pages using my dial-up connection. I can dial up and get connected but that's where it stops and I just get error messages for e-mails and "Page not displayed" for websites. All the original settings for each e-mail account are unchanged so it must be something elsewhere that has changed.
If you have any ideas I'd be really grateful as all my business details are on the other computer which is some distance from my office!

Hi,
Well i'm guessing its the sttings you changed with that support guy which is stumping you. Can you remember some of the settings you changed? Also are you sure the connection is live when you dial it? hover over the connection in the taskbar at the bootom right of you screen and see if it says you are connected...should give a speed like 33.6 or 40 probably...

Thanks for your reply,
The computer definitely connects to the internet.
I've been back on to the support guy and he is totally stumped. He says he'll discuss it with his colleagues in the morning. We've been through every setting imagineable and everything seems to be correct. The DNS is okay, all the settings are correct when I go to ipconfig but when I tried pinging a website like google, it just comes back with "page not found".
I wonder if the modem/router, which they believe is faulty and are replacing, has corrupted my computer in some way.
I hope this gets sorted soon or I'm in real trouble when I set up Broadband.

Yes it does sound strange sorry I can't be more help but if you have gone over the obvious settings i'm also a bit stumped without being able to hand-on look at it. Let me know what they come back and say...

Hi again
My problem has at last been solved although what caused it nobody can fathom.
As I have Windows XP, I went back to the day before the problem occurred in System Restore and everything returned to normal. I now have a modem which works fine and I'm enjoying the amazing speeds at last.
Thanks again for your replies. I have learned a lot about PCs in the last few days because of this, so maybe it wasn't such a bad experience after all!
Best wishes
Sue
