thank you for your reply... i ended up having the wrong ide cable
now i have the proper UDMA cable in place and the computer runs fine except for crashing when i try to play my favorite game :/

Im glad that you fixed UDMA cable issue,
Now, as for your crashes during game play there are so many reasons for it, by the way what's your PC specs?
possible cause
1) outdated video and sound driver
2) not enough memory
3) dust and debris accumulated on the video card
4) your PC are running too many applications at the same time
5) software defect, try using your friend's identical copy of that game which works perfectly
6) if your using high end video card like RADEON 9800, sometimes the overcloking may induce this crash
7) memory timing
and the lists goes on...

I ended up fixing the crash issue too.... turns out my Memory wasn't fully seated into the slot... enough to run the computer but I guess it was losing data when I was trying to run the game and it couldn't handle it.
I don't know. It works now though
