    Unhappy cd rom isnt working

Hi, I have a problem with my cd rom drive, I havent used it for awhile and when I went to use it nothing happened. Im unsure what type it is either, it has a play/skip button on the front and it plays audio cd's without a problem but using the play/skip button is the only way it works, windows media player doesnt even detect a cd in the drive, can anyone help? I have limited skills with computers and am at a loss to why it doesnt work, even installation discs dont work (scanner, webcam etc). I have windows xp pro with sp2, I would take it down to the shop but they charge too much just to look at it, any ideas on why it doesnt work? Maybe something to do with BIOS or CMOS settings, any help is muchly appreciated.

Nothing in the BIOS should prevent the cd-rom drive from working, except when you want to boot from it, but that isn't the issue here.

    Anyone?

Does the drive show up in the Device Manager?

    start/ run/ devmgmt.msc

If so click the entry & look for problems; yellow "!"; or try to see if there are driver updates there.

Did the drive ever work in XP? Did the drive ever work after SP2?

What's the make & model of the CD rom drive? There may be a newer driver available that will work after installing SP2.
