    2 problems...Virtual Memory and a sound thing.

    Hello.

I keep getting one of those little bubbles in the bottom left of the screen telling me that "Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file. During this process memory requested for some applications may be denied. and windows will try and free some up."

I can only find help relating to Norton Personal Firewall program, I have norton Anti virus, but not the firewall. I do think it may of started around the time I got Zone Labs ZoneAlarm firewall that may not be the case, it just started around the same, definatly not before and if one firewall can cause it could another?

If anyone can help with this that'll be great.

Also, I've had problems with my sound and volume. My volume control panel disapeared from my computer quite a while ago and somebody here helped me out. It was when there was some other forums here (I think, unless it's just been deleted), but whoever it was couldn't really help me find out what had caused it, but posted a copy of their volume panel and told me which folder I should put it in.

It's worked, but not brilliantly. Somethings are really loud, playing a midi file, or a video in real player I have to set the volume down to almost nothing Reason it very loud as well, but videos or wav files in media player work fine. Even an audio file that I've exported from Reason that was really loud (or just right) will come out fairly (or very) quiet when played in media player.

When I open the volume control which I have pinned to my start menu (the sndvol32.exe posted by somebody here which I put in my system32 folder) it's not in start>programes>accessories.entertainment(I'm also missing CD player and the other things that you'd normaly find in there). Anyway, when I open that and the 'volume control' slider is unmoveable, it's sort of transparent if you know what I mean. And it's stuck quiet high, so I have set the 'wave', 'SW synth' and 'CD player' faders almost as low as they'll go.

I also have a M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 sound card(not 100% sure of the numbers at the end). When I open their sound mixer thingy none of the sliders affect the sound. You can see the levels going through 'WavOut1/2', but not through the master mixer.

    Thanks

    Terry

Your virtual memory problem is not caused by any firewall, it's a common problem
which, strangely enough is caused by Windows setup setting the virtual memory max size too low. This means when more is needed (when you have several progs running) Windows can't change it without restarting. Easily fixed. Open Control Panel. Change view to 'Classic View' if not already. Open 'System'. Click on 'Advanced' tab. At the top (Performance) click on 'Settings' button. Advanced tab. At the bottom, click 'Change'. Click in the spot where it says 'System Managed Size', then click the 'Set' button. Then 'OK'. Windows may have to restart then (can't remember). Your virtual memory will now be able shrink and expand as necessary in future without Windows nagging you or having to restart.

Have you checked settings via Control Panel > Sounds & Audio Devices?

Have you check for any problems with your sound card via the Device Manager? Start > Run > devmgmt.msc > Sound, Video, Game Controllers?

    Also look thru these links:

I'll have to dig out my copy of the xp cd before I can see if that works.

But as I was trying one of the things I got the low on virtual memory thing again, I've do the thing suggested above and I've double checked the settings were all save. So if anyone has any more on that it would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Can you press Ctrl + Alt + Del and go into Task Manager? On the Performance tab, you'll see a bar chart of how much memory you're using (both RAM and virtual memory). What's the "MEM Usage" running at? (this is the current total memory in use)

In the "Commit Charge" section, what's the Peak value? (this is the most memory that Windows has tried to use since you started the PC and, if it's much higher than the current "MEM Usage", it might indicate a process suddenly hogging loads of memory when it shouldn't)

In the "Physical Memory" section, what are the Total and Available values? (this is how much RAM is fitted inside your PC and detected by Windows, and the amount that is still free).

Sorry your still having memory problem. I do know for a fact that Norton AV is heavy drain on system resources (which includes memory) so that isn't helping much. That's why I switched to another AV prog. Try a different virtual memory setup which I use and never get low memory messages. Go back to the virtual memory setup. Change it to 'Custom Size' by clicking in that little spot. I have 256MB RAM and I use these VM settings: 'Initial Size' 500, and 'Max Size' 3000 - then click 'Set'. If you still get low VM warning and it won't let you set the max size as high as mine, then it could be your C drive is getting full. How much free space do you have?
