    System Volume Information

A friend has asked me to look at his PC as Norton WinDoctor is reporting over 2000 yes 2000 Invalid Shortcuts and takes an age to run. (It never seems to get to the end of a repair) The missing shortcuts are almost all reported in C:\system volume information\ -restore (followed by a string of numbers and letters). Unlike my own system, which reports the C:\system volume information as 0 bytes and won't let me view its contents, my friends system reports this directory as having over 3Gb! It also allows me to view its contents (a large number of numbered directories). I do not like messing with hidden system files but would like some advice. Many thanks.

The folder you refer to is used by 'System Restore'. It's where all the info is stored for the restore points, you must have system restore turned off so yours is empty. Just turn system restore off on your friends PC (Control panel - System) This will delete all the existing restore points (and hence the invalid shortcuts too). Then turn it on again.
