Posted a thread last week re- my 5 year old Toshiba - whether to upgrade or buy a new laptop. While thinking about it I've had some problems now - lots of clicking - slow downloading of websites - a couple of rebooting. I always "housekeep" once a week, registry etc. Also had to use system restore at the week-end. Maybe it is time to buy?
Any thoughts gladly received.
Well, I like my 1 year old Toshiba. Certainly you can get a nice notebook for less than you paid for that notebook. Still, clicking sounds typically indicate hard drive failure. If that's your only problem, you can probably get another year or two out of it. Is that the original battery?
Try a different charger first. Make sure it is the correct charger though, or you may get an unpleasant surprise.
Li-Ion are not suitable for long term storage - chemical action degrades them over time regardless of use. If you do wish to store them, get them to a 40% charged state, and keep them in the fridge.
Thanks both. I have very rarely used the Toshiba on battery which has never been very long. I've also noticed a slow response from the keyboard but - and this is what is puzzling me - not every time I type. It's seems to be only in search boxes e.g Google or when I'm shopping. This message was no problem at all. I've tried both wireless and cable - not much difference. No problem in my word processors either. In all the years I've been using both laptops and desktops - never had this problem..... Have just tried MSN and searching Bing, No trouble at all Could there be a problem with Google (have switched of instant as found it too annoying. Still getting clicks though.

I agree with the 40%, but a cool, dry place is fine, they do not need to be refrigerated.Well, I saw on the news today that Google has suffered a significant email outage so maybe some of their network is affected.Have just tried MSN and searching Bing, No trouble at all Could there be a problem with Google (have switched of instant as found it too annoying. I would make sure your system is free of malware and you have ample free disk space. And by all means, back up any data, including email, photos, letters, etc. you don't want to lose if, when that drive finally fails.
Glad to hear my machine may not be too bad after all! I backed up yesterday and do so on a regular basis. Have a good amount of free disk space also. I think I'll buy another machine soon but keep this one. I'm really impressed by the speed of answers from DAL.
Thank you.
Thanks - it does not always happen as we are all volunteers scattered about the globe and its many timezones. But quality is actually what it is about so hopefully the quality of the answers is there too.I'm really impressed by the speed of answers from DAL.
I am writing this on my Samsung netbook. I really think my Toshiba is on it's last legs! Have had no trouble on my Samsung.
I was blaming web site download speeds - Google etc. Have backed up again and will have to find out how to transfer my files, photos etc to the new machine when I get it which won't be long now. Thanks for your help.
Well, the best way will be be to put your Toshiba's hard drive in an enclosure attached to your new computer and copy off your data.
Thanks for all your suggestions. I've now got a Sony Vaio laptop. After all the "stuff" that comes with a new machine, it's finally settled down and I'm coming to grips with Windows 7. The only thing I don't like so far is NO favorites in start menu! But hopefully will master that also. I'm keeping my Toshiba as backup.
Regards
