What happens when it tries to boot? And where did the Vista recovery CD come from?

When it tries to boot all I get is a black screen with a curser. CD came from a web page not sure were, it was a 32 bit if that helps.

Well you describe what is commonly called the Black Screen of Death and it could be caused by many things. You might get lucky with these procedures. If not, then you may have to reinstall Windows. The Toshiba should have a recovery option to take it back to the out-of-the-box status. It will be in the owners manual that came on the Toshiba utilities disk with the notebook. Or can be downloaded from the Toshiba website.
If there is critical data on the disk your friend does not want to lose, you can pull the hard drive and install it in another computer as a secondary (not boot) drive, or into an enclosure attached to another computer, then copy the data off.
