89 processes running in task manager, help needed to stop ones I don't need

It's making my laptop slower, so can anyone tell me how to stop all the unwanted processes at start-up? as I only use a few programmes, I don't want to attempt it without asking an expert incase I delete something important.

    Thanks.

I like to use WinPatrol to control which programs run on boot up however you have to be careful what you stop. Research the program and find out what it does before disabling it. BTW this doesn't delete the program but prevents it from running automatically. As an alternative you can use Msconfig. In addition if you really know what you are doing you can turn off services but most of them are needed so you have to be even more careful with that utility. Also open up the start menu and find the startup folder. Everything in there also runs automatically & those should be safe to remove. You'll need to right click and select delete. Don't worry these are probably just shortcuts.

89 programs is typical for Vista however I can understand you computer being slow if you have less than 2 gb of ram which is what I consider to be the bare minimum for Vista. If you do I would strongly consider an upgrade. If you tell us more about your computer (mainly make/model & amount of ram) we should be able to help you further. Unfortunately manufacturers didn't put in enough ram on cheap computers when Vista first came out.
