Problem with Windows Update and side-by-side error

This is a derived topic from a thread that I started in the Xp forum, the reason I have re-started the thread is that the subsequent issue(s) are on my laptop that runs Vista Ultimate.

The original thread was "Problem using USB for medium to large size files" and has been answered brilliantly by Jim23 and Ztruker.

I am now faced with trying to run a program called PMB :- Picture Motion Browser from Sony, that I received when I purchassed a Sony Handycam. The program is excellent and runs perfectly on my wife's (Vista Home) laptop (why do wives machines always work better than their husbands??!!).

When I try to run it I get the error message "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more details". I tried to find out what this means and it seems to me that there is no clear understanding.

I looked in various help files and came to the conclusion that the problem is something to do with the latest security update for MS C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB973923).

I have a long standing problem with my laptop as it only rarely successfully downloads Microsoft Updates. So I felt if I could solve the problem with downloading updates then possibly that would cure the "side-by-side configuration" issue.

I attach the following screen shots:

    1) Part of my update log that shows a whole list of failed updates,

    2) Part of the list of updates that have installed correctly,

    3) Finally the output of the event viewer for the side-by-side error message.

I apologise if this is all a bit complicated but I seem to have two interrelated issues.

    Kind regards

    Maritn

    Hi Jim trying it now.

It didn't work immediately, so I am going to uninstall the whole of the Sony software, restart the computer and then try reinstalling.

    Kind regards

    Hi Martin

The things that me bothers from your Update history

Is, Nearly All the failed updates are security updates.

This would suggest that it could be a possible Malware/Virus related problem

So the first an most important process in resolving your problems is to ensure this is not the case.

Could you go to the Spyware,Malware section and read the stickys there

Bob Pomeroy's Silverlight Blog : How to manually clean up a broken Silverlight installation

You need to go through the process of illuminating the possibility of viruses etc.

    HI Jim,

I have always been very careful to keep my laptop as clean as possible, as I use it for presenting my work and as a key tool for my job.

This download problem has been with me for a while and I have tired in vain to cure it.

I attach the download history for today. I have two other laptops my wife's laptop and one that is dedicated to a ballroom dance club that I help run and is primarily used to present music via a program called OtsJuke AV music .

I will go through the link you suggest, I would like to get this problem fixed first.

    Kind regards

Sorry Martin the link I meant to give you was this

Spyware, Adware, Viruses and HijackThis Logs - D-A-L Computer Help

    Read the sticky's there.

We need to rule out malware/virus before we proceed with other possible solutions to your problem.

    Hi Jim,

Apologises for not getting back earlier but I have contacted Zoostorm, the manufacturers of my laptop computer and their technical department has recommended that I do a complete reinstall.

Problem is they ask me to use my Vista DVD, I didn't get one when I purchased the laptop, I think it has one of these protected areas on the hard disk (which if I had known before I bought the machine, may have made me change my mind).

Don't ask my opinion about MS licence policies!!!!!!

Maybe this is the time to move to Windows 7 (which ought to be free for everyone who bought Vista).

    Kind regards

    Hi Martin

According to this article at Geek.com

Vista buyers get free Windows 7 upgrade June 26 to October 22 | Geek.com

If you buy a new PC with Windows Vista Home Premium, Vista Business or Vista Ultimate on or after June 26, and before the October 22 release date of Windows 7, then you will be eligible to receive a free Windows 7 upgrade.

Don't know if that's correct perhaps someone else can confirm Yes or No

If you do go the win 7 update way. Don't forget to run Upgrade advisor found here

Download details: Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor

It could save you some heartache

The fact your PC maker did not include a real has nothing to do with MS policies of any kind, let alone their license policies. The versions makers include with computers are completely up to the makers.
