Is this a new problem?
If so try a System Restore to when all was well:
start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

Slow problem is a common event for Windows user. It's not all related with hardware, registry, viruses or spyware!
"No matter how fast or shiny computers might be when they're new, they all seem to get slower over time." Microsoft claimed that on their technical forum(Windows 7 forum).
In fact, Windows built-in a lot of services and startup item start with system. So if you want a faster computer, you need to disable some of them first.
I saw an article before. It descripe how to make your windows faster.

Playing with services and registry is not recommended on this and many other sites.
Avoid posting link to commercial sites of unknown origins.
I deleted two other identical replies of yours in couple of other threads.
If you continue posting those links, you'll be banned.

Prefetch folder is in the Windows folder. To get to it you need to unhide system files and folders, this is often not advised by OS gurus, but you can recheck the item to hide them again. I don't understand why Norton says this speeds up PC performance because what it does is delete files that are fetched by memory as Windows starts for programs that you use frequently. It could be you use a lot of programs and so there are a lot of files being loaded into memory in case you reuse these programs and it is hampering your system memory.
You can always install more RAM. To do this find compatible RAM for your PC and then a dependable guide for installing RAM. On a quick search with Bing I found this: How to Install RAM | eHow.com
Disk Defrag and Disk Cleanup are both in accessories-->system tools. Run them as an administrator in Vista and Windows 7.Set a schedule for Disk Defreag because this will keep yoiur PC clean and prevent performance hamper in the future.
To optimize your PC for best performance, right click Computer-->choose advanced system settings link on the left panel. A window will open and under Advanced tab-->performance display box choose the settings button. Then check the box that says adjust for best performance.
To index your files, go to control panel-->turn windows features on/off--> it will take a second to load. When the display box opens, find indexing make sure it is checked. Once you check it, Windows will build the Index. If it is already checked, you have a built index and this increases searching your pc for files and folders.
To clean your PC of dust buildup which could be hampering its performance, open up the side cover by removing the screws holding it in place and slide it off. Make sure the power is off, all plugs are detached, and the power chord is not connected. Press the power button for five seconds or so to bleed out any remnance of power left in the system. Then touch a piece of metal on the case for a few seconds to ground yourself to the PC and prevent and static sparks or shocks from damaging your equipment. Put on some latex gloves, get a cannister of compressed air and spray it on your hardware. You might want to wear a little mask on your face because dust could come flying out and choke you.
Norton books also say that checking the box in your folder options which says to hide known file extensions will increase PC speed.
Another thing you can do is insert a brand new USB flash drive into your USB ports. A window will pop up asking you what to do, choose speed up my system with speed boost. Windows will format the disk to act as additional memory for your pc when it is inserted into the usb ports.
Out of habit, I always run chkdsk /f when my pc slows. chkdsk /f fixes broken sectors on the hard drive. /r does a more through search for these sectors and implies /f so that the same disk fix is applied.
Additionally, if you startup a lot of program by default when you start Windows it can slow startup and shutdown processes. Windows Vista and Windows 7 have built in programs to allow you to disable or remove entries in your startup programs file in order to prevent programs from starting. Hold down the Windows Logo+R on your keyboard (or fiund the run command in either the Windows folder or the start button menu) and type msconfig. Click the services tab, from there you can see a list of processes starting on your computer. Don't mess with anything that isn't a program which you have installed, for instance if you see Adobe startup helper or Adobe Upmngr those are safe to disable. Windows starts a lot of processes to keep your computer stable and you do not want to disable those. As a rule, if it says Microsoft Corp. on manufacturer, don't touch it. Services that start as a result of software you have installed you can see, and some are safe to stop, though not all. Read up in order to learn how to effectively manage your startup programs.
*Broni has already suggested this is not advised! I post it here for your READING reference! Don't mess with startup services on account me, I mean it, DON'T DO IT UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!!
