Try a System restore to a point prior to your problems:

start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

Or start in Safe Mode opting for System Restore.

Slow start ups are often caused by corrupt or missing drivers or hardware. Any errors in Device Manager? Any networked drives? Note that items on your desktop must be loaded every time you boot so a cluttered desktop can slow boot times.

Once it is booted up, does it run fine?
