i am having hp pavillion desktop preinstalled vista basic. i wnt to have my xp along with the vista how can i do it i am having recovery disk of vista only kindly guide me

First off you would need a retail version of XP on CD.

Next after installing XP you would need to "repair install" Vista as the Boot Sector would need to be corrected.

I would suggested upgrading to Windows 7 rather than a downgrade path.

If you just want the data off your old XP drive you can use it as a slave or non-primary drive.
