    Exclamation Invisible desktop icons

So, I got a new laptop. It's running Vista 64.
Sometimes when I turn it on, all of the desktop icons are invisible. Computer, My Documents, files, folders, everything. They're there, but they can't be selected or highlighted....or seen.
If I right click the desktop, View>Show Desktop Icons is already turned on. If I turn it off and then on again, they all pop up again.
    Any thoughts?

Also, the recovery disks that came with my Asus do NOTHING. If I put the first disk in and restart the computer (or shut it down then boot it back up again) it does nothing.

also, i'm taking online courses at my college. The professor has put up a bunch of what are essentially powerpoint presentations with commentary. They are NOT powerpoint. They are .mov quicktime movies. I'm using firefox and have already downloaded and installed quicktime. Trailers and stuff from the quicktime site work just fine.
All it shows is the quicktime logo and what looks like a loading bar that just keeps loading and loading and loading and never doing anything.
