I have two suggestions. First off something is running your CPU at near 100% which should not happen but even so your CPU at 100% should not be over 70C.

First suggestion is to make sure the air vents (most likely on the rear or bottom) are clear of dust.

Next suggestion: try starting normally and immeadiately enter MSCONFIG

How to use MSCONFIG in Windows Vista: NetSquirrel.com

Go to Startup and choose Diagnostic and select Disable ALL and restart the computer.

Just to note in a worst case scenario HP has a full restore function via F11 on startup.

....well.... the F11 does not work...we have tried that a couple of times. we also cleaned the vents ..... we are going to try the MSCONFIG...... but my dad said he doesnt think it will wokr cause it doesnt let him do much before it either freezes or shuts off again

Let us know if that works.

    Otherwise:

What happens when you try F11?

    See this:

Order Recovery Discs for Windows Vista or XP

Another option is to create an Ubuntu Live CD and see if you can boot it:

    Ubuntu Home Page | Ubuntu

If this is not a software related issue the graphics chip on the motherboard may have burned out.

You would still see the BIOS and DOS disks but you would not be able to sustain any GUI.

Anyway the Ubuntu CD would be a good test of that. If it will not load the latter hardware issue is more likely.

If you go to this point you need to set the BIOS Boot Menu to boot the CD drive prior to the hard drive.

    no problem.

The download is an ISO file which needs to be "imaged" to a CD/DVD.

You cannot just burn the data but need to "Create a Disk Image".

If you do not have Nero or do not know what I am talking about here is a free program that will do this:

What exactly happens when you try F11?

What exactly happens when you try to boot Ubuntu?

Speaking of the registry indicates you can still get into Windows? Yes?

If so what exactly happens when you try the MSCONFIG I mentioned last night?
