Mysterious Reboot

    Re: Mysterious Reboot

I hadn't changed anything in the task scheduler and I don't do automatic back-ups. I didn't even know what all is in task scheduler. How do I know if there is a conflict and which one of them would restart the computer? I also don't have anti malware scans run automatically but prefer to do it manually. So what else? Could a virus restart my computer? I'll do a scan tomorrow while I'm at work. It didn't restart today.

Do I need to clear the logs? How?

Do I need to clear the logs?
    No.
    How?
    Umm, right click and clear.

By a conflict I meant to make sure your AV is not scanning the same time the system is backing up, or doing some other tasks. Your errors indicate a backup issue. You might want to check How to disable the backup-related scheduled tasks in Windows Vista.

Task scheduler is not set up to run automatic backups and my AV is not set to run automatically so it has to be something else. Can a virus do this?

Also are the logs cleared in event viewer? I'm not seeing that.

    Sorry - "Clear all events".

Yes, there are viruses that can cause a computer to reboot. If you suspect a virus, you should update and scan.

I didn't see a clear all events (is that in Vista?) but I did find out how to clear the logs of each category individually. I'll run a scan while I'm at work and post back what I find.

Well I ran a AV scan if Avast! and it only found false positives (Linux virtual machine [VMWare] and document templates [.dot]) so now what?

I haven't had a mysterious reboot since the other day so I guess thats a good sign. Now I know that my computer doesn't reboot on power outage because we had a brief power outage last night. Another possibility ruled out.

Well my computer has rebooted several times since my last post both before and after SP 2 installation. It seems like a lot of the times it happens that I'm uploading some files to adrive. This last time [earlier this evening] was different. Event viewer:

4:59:16--Faulting application CCC.exe, version 2.0.0.0, time stamp 0x494a943f, faulting module KERNEL32.dll, version 6.0.6002.18005, time stamp 0x49e037dd, exception code 0xe053534f, fault offset 0x0003fbae, process id 0x%9, application start time 0x%10. [Hadn't seen that]
9:17:41--The previous system shutdown at 9:15:55 PM on 6/1/2009 was unexpected. [seen that]
9:18:52--Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected. [hadn't seen that]

Of course these reboots are never when I'm at my computer. I'm not sure that that would help anyway. I don't have my computer sleep automatically nor have I messed with the task scheduling other than a scheduling for my anti virus which I did through the software and not through windows. Should I export and upload my logs? Well Bill if you would like I don't think that I would have a problem emailing them to you but I'm not so sure about putting them in the forum. They don't contain any personal information that I can tell. I could put them on adrive, share it, and pm you the link if you think that it would help.

I do have a copy of this install of Vista on another hard drive. What I use is actually a copy of that install. Its a long story [read if you want to know more]... I could run that for a while and see if that reboots but it isn't as current. Since then I have added programs and installed Sp2 but no other system changes such as drivers. What do you think? I'm not afraid to reinstall if it come down to it but I haven't had any other problems. No blue screens, boot failures, etc and this is only intermittent. What do you think?
