    bizarre headphone problems....

about 4 weeks ago maybe? i started to have a problem with my headphone jack, basically it wasnt working at all, when i plug my headphones in the music/noise just continues to come out my speakers.

anyway, i sent it back to toshiba twice, and on the second time they told me its a problem with my windows as when they test it they use their own windows and the headphone jack works fine!

so now im trying to figure out whats wrong, iv tried system restore as far back as i can, but it doesnt work, iv got into sound settings in the control panel and cant find anything obvious, however, when i go into the sound options and then under headphones, if i click test i can hear sound coming out the headphones, but for some reason i still cant get it to override the speakers when i plug my headphones in! even if i set the headphones as default device it still doesnt work.....

    any ideas?

(p.s laptop is toshiba u400, running vista 32bit, and iv checked device manager but cant find anything not working or obvious?)

ok kind of an update, if i set the headphones as default device, then the headphones work, otherwise, if theyre not the default device they wont work?

ok iv pretty much solved this but its still not 100%,

i unplugged my headphones and set speakers as default, then plugged headphones in and set them as default,

now when not headphones are pluggedin it works fine ,

however, if im playing music, out of speakers, and i plug the headphones in it doesnt automatically switch over?

and if the headphones are plugged in and music is playing and i remove the headphones, rather than switching straight to speakers i just fget an error and have to relaunch the program (ie media player?)

From the last situation have you rebooted?

I don't know if I can be much help as I have to do the same thing basically.

In other words whenever I switch between speakers and headphone I have to reset the default device.

    Are your headphones USB?

After you uninstalled your "soundcard" did you reload the drivers from Toshiba?

I'd suggest getting the drivers from Toshiba:

    Toshiba Support - Homepage

Click Download and follow the prompts to your model.
