    Vista Updates constantly restarting

    hey
trying to fix a toshiba laptop with windows vista
it was purchased at the beginning of last year
when i turn the computer on it starts running the system update software
but the thing is it doesnt actually do anything ... at all
it moves from 1 of 3 to 3 of 3 with out doing anything it just stays at 0% the whole time
worst thing is if i leave it to its business it just shutsdown, restarts itself and does the whole process over and over again
i have tried running in safe mode, with command prompt ect ..
the only choice i dont get is 'start windows with last known good configuration'
i know that there is probably a virus in the system but could it be doing this ?
and i know if i can get past this little hic-up i reckon ill be able to hunt the little blighter down
but my problem is i cant get into the actually system because of said problem lol
    any help is well appretiated

So you can start Safe Mode?

If so did you try a System Restore via Safe Mode?

If that doesn't help try the following:

Check your startup entries for Wuauclt.exe

MSCONFIG: speeding up Windows Vista startup

    Also this might work:

    - Click on the Start button, click RUN (or press the Windows-Key+R) and in
the text entry area, type the following:

    net stop wuauserv

    - Click OK.
    - Click on the Start button, click RUN (or press the Windows-Key+R) and in
the text entry area, type the following:

    regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll

    - Click OK.
    - Click on the Start button, click RUN (or press the Windows-Key+R) and in
the text entry area, type the following:

    net start wuauserv

    - Click OK.
    - Reboot

    thanks for all the info
but i cannot get into the system at all once i start the computer in either 'safe mode' or 'start system normally' the outcome is the same
the updates start to run but dont work and the computer restarts itself all over again
i tried putting the vista disk in and trying to get it to repair the system using the disk but it didnt work
and system restore (also running from the disk) says it cannot run properly in this mode (i think meaning from the disk)
i actually think my only option is to actually re-format the whole C: drive
which i dont really want to have to do
