Problems when Burning Audio CDs in Vista

    Hi all,

Lately I've been having serious problems trying to burn audio cds in Windows Vista.

Now I've tried doing this using both Media Player and Nero and I have the same problem. Occasionally CDs will burn but I waste countless blank CDs trying to do it.

I don't know why but while the cd is burning, before it finishes it just stops burning and the CD drive becomes inactive, I have to force the program to close using task manager but the CD drive just goes to sleep, I can't even open the tray. In order to open the tray I have to power off the computer manually because at this point it doesn't even shut down on its own.

    Would really appreciate some help.

    Thanks

    Hi omid...

Quick question...what happens when you burn a large (fill the whole CD with data) Data CD? Trying to figure out if it fails the same way to see if it's hardware related.

    OK

I just burned a Data CD where the CD wasn't completely full (about 24mb to spare) and although at the end of the burn it said something like "burn error" the cd still worked with all the data on it.

I'm currently burning another data CD which is completely filled up and it has stuck at 6% meaning the only way of getting the cd to open is to switch the computer off by force!

What do you think is the problem?

So it's failing the same way whether you burn an audio cd or a data cd...I'm thinking it's hardware related. Do you have a spare cd-rw that you can install or borrow one and install.

You could also try another piece of burning software called CDBurnXP and see if the data burn fails with this software. If fails I've also seen where Nero has caused issues...so you could also uninstall Nero and try burning another data cd with CDBurnerXP

Software can be downloaded => CDBurnerXP: Introduction and News

Thanks, although I tried burning audio with both Nero and WMP, I've removed an old dvd burner from my old PC so I'm about to open up this Dell for the first time (got it about 20months ago) to fit it, will also download the software

thanks, will get back to you

wow i just wasted half an hour trying to get this dvd player fitted into this dell but it turns out disc drives on newer computers don't use IDE connections?? (I know, it's been a while since i last built/repaired a computer). Is there an adapter I can use to fit the dvd drive ino the Dell computer so that I have 2 disc drives?

Anyway back to the point, I used CDBurnerXP and it worked, so far so good, thanks!

Ahhh! I didn't even think to add that your newer Dell might have a SATA CD-RW...sorry about that...my bad!

I'm glad that CDBurnerXP is working for you...that very well could mean that your burner is fine and it's software related. Try uninstalling Nero, rebooting (to release files in memory), then reinstall Nero.

    Just to add:

Yes they make adapters but they are often problematic.

    "Cheap" ones often fail.

If you get one read some reviews on it etc.

Just to add to jephree's info...Instead of going with an adapter, go with a new optical device. CD\DVD Burners\Drives are quite cheap in price these and you should be able p/u one up locally for...Burners are $25.00 to $30.00 bucks and Drives are around $20.00.

Yep I noticed in the research at actually good adapters are the same price as new optical drives, in which case I may as well just stick to having one drive seeing as it's not really a problem,

    thanks for the help!
