I got a new laptop this past sept and it came with Vista Home Premium 64 and I have been having trouble with it ever since.
1. Whenever it comes out of sleep everything seems to just stop working. I cant connect to a wireless network, things just don't open, explorer just freezes and end process wont work for it, and I can't even shut it down properly. I have to power it down by holding down the power button.
2. Just having it on for a few hours, not going into sleep mode, and things slow down/stop working. itunes for example just won't open, when I right click on something on the desktop freezes explorer and end process/restart explorer dont work.
3. Things don't shut down properly, again for example itunes. When I close it the process doesn't stop. I have to manually end the process through task manager but after that it wont reopen without a restart.
4. Also(this isnt as important) when I accept a file transfer from Pidgin it freezes, wont shut down and prevents the laptop from shutting down/restarting.
Most of the things I said are just some of the things that are happening but eveyrthing is along those lines. I have to do a manual shut down 4-5 times a day from light use. It's getting unbearable and I don't know what to do, I'm at school and dont have my copy of XP to downgrade to within 3,000 miles.
Any help?
What is the make and model of the laptop?
Have you considered getting service from the manufacturer under the warranty?
Have you considered using the manufacturers suggested way to reinstall Vista?
Have you experimented with the difference between battery power and AC if any?
What is the make and model of the laptop?
Its a PowerPro P 12:15/Compal JHL90
Have you considered getting service from the manufacturer under the warranty?
I'd really prefer not to as I do need it daily for school.
Have you considered using the manufacturers suggested way to reinstall Vista?
Actually I hadn't, I suppose I could try and clean up my external HD for a backup and try that this weekend.
Have you experimented with the difference between battery power and AC if any?
Yeah, I get the same problems either way
You could try calling them up just to see what they say:
PowerNotebooks.com - Laptop & Notebook Technical Support
It is always difficult to determine if it is a software or hardware issue. Just a quick reaction would be to change your power settings and see if that makes a difference. Also monitor your Event Viewer as to any recurrent errors.
The retail version of Vista has a Repair or Upgrade reinstall that leaves your documents and settings and programs intact but I don't know about this manufacturers options. Often they vary and may only have a full reinstall (factory) rest of Vista. Again a call to them would also clarify this and present you with perhaps more options.
I took a look at my Event Viewer and aside from the application errors I get from programs like HL2 when I exit, there seems to be two that are happening way too frequently to seem like a coincidence to me:

I;'ll give the manufacturer a call tomorrow, thanks so far for the help
As to the first event see this:
Event ID 10 is logged in the Application log after you install Windows Vista Service Pack 1 or Windows Server 2008
The second is a fairly standard application hang but I'll look about for any more info on it.
The second event raises perhaps a hardware RAM issue although it could be many other things as well.
I'd suggest running a memory diagnostic:
Either via Vista:
How to use the Vista Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool
Or MemTest.
Well the Vista Memory Diag didn't find anything. I guess I'll just wait and call the manfac. Thanks for all your help
No problem. Let us know how it goes.
Gave them a call, they recommended to reformat and if the problem still persists to send it in to them.
I'm gonna clean up my external HD's and try a reformat to see if that helps.
