Sound Device in Vista Home Premium

I am not very techy but my tech friends are thrown by this one. Maybe someone here can solve this mystery for me. I was sitting here reading email and not even touching this computer and one of the emails was a forward from a friend and it needed sound but I noticed my speakers had been turned off. My husband often does this when he is on the computer at night while I sleep. I clicked on the symbol to take me to the sound box to turn them back on and it told me there was no sound device installed in this computer. I looked and found out that I did have a sound device, Realtek High Definition and it came with this system. Up until now it has worked fine but now it is gone and I am unable to put in another or activate this one. I found several places online where similar things had happened but none just the same. So now I have a computer with no sound at all. It seems to also have effected some of the games I play and also some of the ones my husband likes. This is too strange! Has anyone got a fix for me? The computer is a Compaq Presario if that helps any. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

What have you tried to get it to work? Did you try configuring your speakers as your playback device, and does it say their working, or checking for sound driver updates, or trying headphones? Also, what other ones have to tried to activate and what problems did it cause with your games?

Sounds like the forwarded email was malware and should never been opened. Time for a scan maybe.

Hmm, malware is lovely how it shows up just when you'd rather it didn't! That makes sense that an email that required sound would be malware, but in this situation it sounds more like a setting/configuration problem to me. And it sounds like the email was from a friend and likely a forwarded video or something. The problems all sound that way except for it cause problems with the games. Depending on what that problem is and if it's related I would lean more towards malware or something of that nature, otherwise I would still hold to it being a setting issue.
