    Defender and windows won't update

Hi everyone. Snowed under with work at the moment. For the last week windows defender has been unable to update. Tried downloading the update to do it manually, no dice. Get the page cannot be displayed.
Windows updates cannot check for updates either. I get Windows Update error 8024402C. Have checked all the online solutions and still can't figure out whats going on. Am running Vista Ultimate with Avast. Any ideas?

Thanks Digerati. Turns out the windows firewall was stopping vista and defender from updating. Why it would suddenly start doing that I have no idea? They are updating now and I have the firewall back on once the update started,
Any ideas what to configure to allow these?
Now if I can only find out why IE7 has stopped recording my daily history I'll be fine. I can view all history for the last 2 weeks but yesterday and today are blank.

Perhaps there was an update to the file and the firewall, playing it safe, blocked the changed filed - that said, it should have prompted you. As for your history, that one I don't know.

Figured out the history problem for anyone else that has it. Apparently it has a hissy fit and the only way to get it to keep the history is to go to internet options/browsing history/delete/delete browsing history. IE will delete the history and then start saving it again. Just deleting the folderrs from history won't work.

    Ummm, what?

Are you trying to keep some history and get rid of others? I think CCleaner gives you more options to customize than IE's options.

No I'm saying if windows stops recording your browser history like mine and some others did the easiest way is to do as above. Mine is set to keep 21 days and it forgot how to count. On day 22 it hadn't deleted the first weks history so it refused to record any more. I don't use 3rd party programs to do simple chores.

    lol

I do, if they make them simpler or do them more reliably - to some extent. I don't use 3rd party defraggers, instead thinking Windows own is fine. I figure any advantage the fancy have will be undone after a day or two of use anyway. I suggested CCleaner because it did not seem to be a simple chore you were attempting, not realizing Vista could not count.
