Windows Management console has stopped working........

    Hey guys,

I recently went to check my device manager and use diskeeper and i saw the above error. So i uninstalled diskeeper and tried again, same error. Ive seen on some other forums that a windows disk can repair the damaged files...... unfortunatly i only have a Toshiba rescue disk and i really dont wanna loose all my data. I cant even imagine when I lost the console, mainly because i havent had need to defrag or look at device manager recently. Is there anyway to get this back without having to format my computer?

Well if want to rule out system restore, you could always insert your Vista installation disc and select a repair installation. It will attempt to repair all corrupt system files without altering your personal settings and files.

The easiest method however would be to use the sfc /scannow command. It's simple and quick and worth a shot.

Start -> Run and type in sfc /scannow. Make sure you are running the command prompt as an administrator. You may be asked for a disc at the end so make sure you have your Vista installation handy.

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

ummmm I dont have a Vista disk.... ive only got a Toshiba restore disk, hence my problem.

edit: I did the "sfc /scannow" thing and it got to 100%, i managed to see that there was something corrupted but thats all I could see before the window closed itself. It didnt ask me for a disk or anything, just closed....

I just called my mate and he says he's got a legal copy of Windows Vista Home Premium (which im on). Would it be possible to do a system repair from that? I only as because my wireless card has started turning itself off recently, and I cant get to Device Manager to fix it?

    Any help would be appreciated

I believe that the Vista discs contain all of the versions, and instal whichever you give the code for. So yes, you can borrow the disc off anyone, and as long as you use your licence number of your COA all should be fine. Maybe repairs dont even need the code, i dont know
but yeh, should work, give it a go

fixed it! I was because I'd patched uxtheme.dll and the other two to allow custom themes for windows. Shame, I liked that theme too :P

    All working now though
