My Step Father recently bought a windows vista pc but there is a problem im hoping somebody can help with. As you know there are lots of items come up on the start menu and tool bar when he boots up the computer. But he is trying to control what starts up on the computer.

He uses software called tune up utilities 2008 then unclicks and clicks what software he wants to boot up. Because before he added the software he has same problem.

No matter what he clicks or unclicks on tune up utiliites 2008, it doesnt get any of the software to open automatically on start up.

Can you help please

I recommend WinPatrol for this & I don't know anything about the program you mentioned. I've found WinPatrol to be quite useful & easy in controlling start up programs. You can get it Here. Click on the start up programs tab and here you find all of the programs that have set themselves to run on log in. Click on any entries that you don't want to run & you know that you don't need to run & then click remove and then click yes to confirm. This will not uninstall the program or remove any files.

On the start menu you can also type in msconfig & use that but its not as easy to use, it doesn't give you as much info as winpatrol & it creates an annoying pop up that comes up whenever you log in that can be really hard to get rid of. If you want to use this click on the start up tab & then uncheck any thing that you don't want to run automatically & then click ok. However I don't recommend msconfig since it isn't user friendly but for advanced users.

Just a note: Controlling log in programs is something that I think is a good thing to do if you know what you are doing, what a program in question does, and whether or not you need it to run. That is up to you. If you don't recognize it, then it might be best not to remove it from the startup list as you might run into problems later. Also some programs when run later might re enter its self into the start up list, if that makes any sense. I can list a few things that if you have, that you don't need in that list but I don't know what is there & what you have installed. For instance, quick time and adobe reader like to start up certain small programs automatically & you shouldn't need them to. However consider yourself warned that doing this can cause problems & even system instability so be careful. I do this to my computer but if I don't know what a program is I don't mess with it.
