No response from mouse and keyboard
Hi everybody,
I have Windows Vista 64-bit Ultimate Edition. My C: drive has a capacity of 20 GB, with about 1.5 GB free space.
In order to install SP1, I had to increase the size of the partition. I used a free software called GParted (based on Linux) to increase the partition size to 25 GB. Everything went fine.
On rebooting, chkdsk found errors and corrected them. There were NO bad sectors.
However, on reaching the login "window", the mouse and the keyboard did not respond at all. So, I cannot type/choose the user at all.
I restarted the PC, but still the same problem.
I booted from the DVD, but after choosing the "Repair" option, I found that no restore points existed, and I have no backup either.
I am currently using Linux and can access the C: drive (and other drives as well) without any problem.
Anyone has an idea what the problem could be and how it can be solved?
Thank you in advance

It is certainly an odd little problem you have there, there is possibly a compatibility issue with your machine and Service Pack 1, or maybe a bug in the Service Pack.
How are the mouse and keyboard connected to the computer, PS/2 or USB?
If USB, disconnect all other USB devices such as cameras, printers, scanners, flash memory, etc and then start the computer and see if this rectifies the issue.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
I haven't installed SP1 yet. I was trying to increase the partition size to be able to install it.
The keyboard and mouse are both PS2. They do not respond even in safe mode! The login screen does display the icons for existing users, but, of course, I can't choose any of them!
The keyboard and mouse are fully functional, since I am also running Linux in a dual-boot configuration.
Btw, I am posting on this forum using Linux and the same keyboard and mouse. I also have Windows XP and can use the keyboard and mouse in XP without any problem.
I can also boot into BIOS without any problem.

Sorry I misunderstood about SP1.
It's of course a very difficult problem because I'd ask you to boot into Safe Mode and check Device Manager, etc, but obviously you can't.
What you could try, is performing System Restore, by booting from your Vista installation disc. Instructions on how to perform a System Restore using this method can be found here.

I tried booting from the Vista DVD and running System Restore, but no restore point was found! I must have disabled it!
It looks like no one has encountered a similar problem before.
Anyway, thanks for your replies and suggestions.

There are quite a few other similar cases that have happened on the internet, but I haven't seen any definitive fix whilst searching or a solution that anybody has found. The general solution appears to be to perform a repair installation of Vista.
What is difficult to understood is the fact that the Keyboard and Mouse were working perfectly before. It definitely sounds like a software error rather than a hardware error and it is extremely difficult to diagnose and fix when your computer can't be correctly used.
There are more suggestions I could offer to help you diagnose the problem if you are willing to work with me and try a few things, however I can't guarantee that any fixes I offer will work.

OK, I'm willing to try them before going for a complete re-install.

What I first need to find out is, when you first installed your keyboard and mouse, did you install any driver software or were they simply plug and play i.e. you plugged them in and they worked?
What I'm trying to establish is whether its the Vista default drivers playing up or some custom drivers that could have been corrupted.
-
I didn't install any driver for the keyboard and mouse. Vista automatically installed them.

On your C:\ drive, check that the following files are present, if not, then let me know:
C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\mouclass.sys
C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\kbdclass.sys
C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\i8042prt.sys
