ok, the initial problem was this. videos that initially played fine the first few times where showing as a 2-3 inch vertical strip. Out of curiosity I removed the divx codec and all returned to normal. I hope this info will be of use to others. And yes it was the latest version.

WMP can be installed independent of the operating system.

In most cases in can be installed on top of itself which is a method of troubleshooting.
