    strange question

    Hi everyone,
Can anyone help me. I am getting a bit further with my wireless problem. I rang my ISP who provided me with my wireless router and have got a bit further. I can now work my computer as wirless but only if I type in all of the router info. Ie- ip addresses etc..When I turn off the router and computer all the information that I type vanishes and when I turn it on I have to put it all through again. I'm not happy but much happier that there is a way for me to access the internet wirelessly. I have to go to wireless networks information and then click wireless properties and the section that i have to fill in is:
TCP/IPV4 ( right click for properties)
Does anyone know why it dosen't remember this? I have spent hours trying to sort this out and I strongly feel that it is the router/wireless box that they sent me. Or do you think it could be my computer that is the problem. It seems to me that the wireless box isn't eiter remembering its settings? or is it the computer.
Is there a way that I can save these settings as it only says to click OK not SAVE.
Am much happier because at least I can use it even if I have to typ this in every time. Does anyone have any suggestions.

Clairem, I would say it was the computer not remembering the settings as the router will have no bearing on it. However you should be able to set the TCP/IPV4 to "Obtain an IP address automatically" and also ensure that "Obtain DNS server address automatically" is selected. You should ensure your router is set up to act as DHCP server and that wierless is turned on. Also ensure that the SSID is set with some form of encription. However to get the connection up and running try without (i.e. open). What router do you have?

Its a supanet router. I've had real problems getting it to work at all and they gave me these numbers over the phone whilst trying to sort it all out as every time I turned either the computer or the router off it wouldn't connect again. So I jotted them down and had a go at getting it to work.
I have been told and set it as WEP encription with a password as they said that this is good enough? What is your honest opinion is it good enough when paying with a credit card for shopping etc..?I'll try your suggestions and get back to you. Thaks for your help.

WEP is not very strong encription but it is better than nothing. The safety of your cards for online shopping has absolutly nothing to do with the encription. You need to ensure you have a good anti-virus programme installed or better still an internet security suite (AVG and spyware doctor are good).
supanet are the ISP. What is the make and modle of the router (look for lable on the bottom/rear. I always leve my routre turned on as it helps to maintain theline speed to and from the exchange but that is arguable.

I have Norton Anti Virus installed and when that ends soon I have windows live one to install. It dosen't have anything on the bottom except a barcode. The router set up page is 192.168.1.1 if that helps. When I change the settings to automatically obtain IP address it can't connect. It says that I have a dynamic Ip address on the router set up page? ( the other option is static ip address?
If I leave the computer turned on and turn the router off, then on again I canot connect automatically to the wireless. I have to go to the wireless properties and type in the IP address etc .. I still think that it is something to do with the router as I have a new computer - but could be wrong. Any suggestions? thanks for replying so quickly.

You should be setting the conection on the computer to "obtain address automaticaly" . If you open the router via IE7 (just type its IP address in) it should open and then tell you somewhere what the make and version is. It seems to me that the router is not set up as a DHCP server as the computer is not being allocated an IP address to use. The other option is to set a static IP address on the computer within the range of the router and this SHOULD save when you exit.

plug it in via the cat 5 cable and then open up the connection on the NIC and see what the IP address is. should then be able to change it from use this address in the wireless connection and save it. Then disconect the cat 5 and ensure the wireless is turned on. Reboot the computer and it should connect.

Ok so I connect with my cable it should give another ip address - is that what you mean? In the connection properties. I'll give it a go and let you know. Thanks.
