Re: strange question
Sorry I tried. I connected via the ethernet cable and looked at its properties and under ipv4 it had a different ip number?with all others the same. Is that what you meant. I then went back to 192 etc the main router set up page but wasn't sure which bit I needed to change. Could you explain again for me. Thanks.
That is the only section that I can alter the modem / router settings isn't it. When I go into the wireless properties when connected it only says click to automatically connect or type in numbers here.

OK lets start again. Leave the router alone for now. Plug in the Cat 5 cable and then go to Controle panel>Network and sharing centre. Open the network sharing centre and on the left click on "Manage network connections". On the screen that opens I take it you have two connections (one wireless and one cable). Right click on the one for the cable and then go to the IPV4 tab open it and write down the IP address. Close that and then open the Wireless connection and in click on "Use the following IP address" and in there put in the address you wrote down from the cable connection but on the last number add one (i.e if address was 192.168.0.1 then put 192.168.0.2) in the sub net boxes put the same numbers that you have on the cabel connection (255.255.255.0 more than likely. Check on router and it will say somewhere). When you have done this click on "OK" then on "OK" again. restart the computer after removing the cable. when it has started go back to the "Manage network connections screen and double left click on the wireless connection icon and it will bring a screen up telling you about the connection and you should then be working ok.

HI,
I tried all of that and it still won't automatically connect. After I turn off computer I have to type all the numbers in again. However I did notice this time that after I have turned it off, in the properties for wireless it says:
Auto configuration IPV4 and has a different number. After I have typed in 192 etc it ( the properties) changes to IPV4 and shows the number that I have just typed in? Is there a way that I can change this auto configuration number ? I wondered if this is why it won't automatically connect as it looks like it may be connecting auto to the wrong number? I'm probably totally wrong.
I found the ip number with the cable and it worked for the wireless by adding a number up though.
Thanks.

Go to start>All Programmes>accessories>Run and put each of these in there and run them:
ipconfig/flushdns
ipconfig/release
ipconfig/renew
Once you have done this re-start the computer and try connecting to the router with th wireless connection again. I think by now your IPconfig is well and truly confused, this should sort it out of its dilemma
