All File Extensions Are Now .LNK On Vista
Hello I know this problem has happened to people before but I can not for the life of me get the solutions mentioned to work.
All of my files are now .LNK files-well the shortcuts on my desktop are and also in my main menu. It was my own fault. I was trying to fix one link and went to default programs and hit associate a file type or protocol with a program. The files all changed to lnk and they are all associated with explorer when they try to open
I tried typing in%systemroot\system32\restore\rstrui.exe but it came up with the following message that Windows could not find it. I've manged to download Registry editor but have no idea what to do from there.
I feel like a real idiot although I never claimed to computer literate Please help
Kim

The restore address would have been %systemroot%\etc.
Or start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
Or you might try this page although it is for XP:

In order to start System Restore from the Task Manager or at a Run... or Command Prompt type:
%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Thank you for answering jephree
I had previously tried typing %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe in the runcommand prompt (sorry I mistyped what I actually entered in my first post)and that is when message came up saying Windows cannot find it' I tried the start programmes, accessories etc as well but because all the files are lnk files including what is in my menu it would not work. At the moment all .lnk files try to open in explorer as that is the program associated with them and then they abort as explorer can't open them.
I have been to the page for dougknox and downloaded the exe file fix and the lnk shortcut fix but have no idea what to do next as I am a newbie

The files listed here are all ZIP files, which contain a REG (Registry) file. Download the ZIP and open it. Extract the REG file to your hard disk and double click it. Answer yes to the import prompt.
